The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office offers exciting employment opportunities for those seeking a career in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff. All applicants must complete a rigorous pre-employment and training process to become a sworn law enforcement officer. This includes a thorough background investigation, pre-employment physical, drug screening, physical agility test, oral board interview, polygraph, and psychological evaluation in addition to attending the 19-week training academy in State College, PA. If you are Act 2 (Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff's Education and Training Board) or Act 120 (Municipal Police Officer Education and Training Commission) certified, training may be abbreviated.
All successful applicants for the position of deputy sheriff will be initially assigned to the Court Security Unit of the Sheriff’s Office upon completion of their basic training. After completion of a deputy’s probationary period and evaluation, the Sheriff’s Office offers opportunities for assignment to the Civil or Criminal Divisions based upon availability, experience, and job performance. Some of the Units you may apply for are : Warrant/Fugitive Apprehension Unit, Civil Process Unit, Transport Unit, Security Post Unit, and K-9 Unit. In addition, we have deputies assigned to the Lancaster County Emergency Response Team and the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force. There is also opportunity for advancement with promotions to the ranks of corporal, sergeant, lieutenant or chief deputy.

Deputy Sheriff Requirements:
· 21 years of age upon graduation from academy
· Valid PA driver’s license at the time of employment
· High School diploma (or equivalent)
· Pass a PT test, oral board, polygraph, psychological evaluation, MPOETC physical exam, drug screen, and background investigation
· Reside within Lancaster County within 1 year of date of hire
· Complete Act 2 Deputy Sheriff Training Academy or Act 120 MPOETC Waiver Course within 1 year of the date of hire
· Successfully complete field training program and probationary period
· Qualify annually with office issued firearm and annual re-certification in various less than lethal devices
· Annual re-certification in Act 2 Updates (10 hours)
· Maintain clean driving record and criminal history
Deputy Sheriff Pay and Benefits:
· Starting pay: $22.26 per hour annual increases as per collective bargaining agreement
· 2 weeks of paid vacation first year - increase every 5 years by one week to a maximum of 5 weeks of vacation per year
· Sick leave and military leave are accrued in addition to vacation
· Sick days accrued at 1 per month (12 per year) with optional sick bank
· 6 personal days per year
· Qualified high deductible health care plan with a health savings account
· Pension that employees are 100% vested in after 5 years of service (or age 60, whichever comes first)
