Lancaster County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit

Me and Drake

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit has been in operation for almost 30 years. It is currently comprised of two K-9 handler teams.  Sergeant David Cole is the supervisor of the unit, and his partner, K-9 Enzo, is a Belgian Malinois.  Deputy Drake Brown and K-9 Atlas, a German Shepherd, are the second team in the unit. The teams have a rigorous training schedule as well as annual certifications they must complete. They are constantly honing their skills and attending training classes so that they can maintain their certifications and use best practices in the law enforcement K-9 world to provide valuable services to the citizens of Lancaster County and beyond.  The K-9 Unit continues to work with other local, state and federal law enforcement partners. These relationships have proven to be invaluable.

K-9 SERVICES

  • Explosives Detection: The canines are trained to detect a variety of odors to include the odor of bomb ingredients. Both canines advise their handlers with a passive alert when they have located an odor source.
  • Tracking: The canines track by either ground disturbance or by the odor of the individual being tracked.  They also alert on found articles along a track by lying down without touching the item.
  • Building Searches:  The canines can locate and apprehend criminals who may be hiding in buildings.
  • Deputy protection: Our canines protect their handlers and other deputies when they are in danger.
  • Demonstrations: The handlers and canines provide skills demonstrations to schools, clubs and businesses throughout Lancaster County.
