Veteran Burial Index (Destitute) (1885-1901)

Records of Civil War veterans that died “destitute” in Lancaster County.  In accordance with Pennsylvania legislation enacted May 12, 1885 county governments paid for the burial expenses of veterans that died with insufficient means to pay for burial expenses.  Provisions of this act provided that the County Commissioners of each County appoint committees to look after, bury and provide a headstone for any honorably discharged soldier.  The Commissioners furnished $35 for veteran burial expenses and $15 for a headstone.  Records provide name of veteran, residence, military unit, rank, date mustered out, occupation, date of death, place of burial, burial expenses, and signatures of witnesses.
