[ARCHIVED] Trial Opens in Racially-Charged Shooting at Columbia Shopping Center

A Columbia woman will stand trial this week on charges regarding a racially-charged shooting last year in a Columbia parking lot.
Ashley Rose Curry, 33, is charged with aggravated assault, ethnic intimidation, and simple assault regarding the Feb. 3, 2015, shooting of a 33-year-old woman in the 900 block of Lancaster Avenue, Columbia.
Attorneys selected a jury Monday afternoon to hear the case. Opening statements are scheduled for Tuesday morning with Lancaster County Judge Merrill Spahn Jr. presiding.
First Assistant District Attorney Christopher P. Larsen is prosecuting; Columbia police Detective Matthew Leddy filed charges.
According to police, Curry confronted a woman after they both turned into a shopping center parking lot, with Curry calling her racial slurs.
Curry spit on that woman and kicked her.
When the 33-year-old woman tried to assist, Curry shot her in the stomach.
When police arrived, Curry police the victim “deserved it.”
Police recovered a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol.
