[ARCHIVED] Driver Charged in Route 30 'Road-Rage' Incident that Caused Crash

Jason Marsico

A Lancaster man is charged with causing a roll-over crash last week during a road-rage incident on a West Hempfield Township highway.

West Hempfield Township police on Monday charged 44-year-old Jason A. Marsico with two counts of felony aggravated assault and related counts regarding the Feb. 5 crash on Route 30.

Marsico, who was injured in the crash, was taken into custody Tuesday following his release from a local hospital. He was arraigned on the charges Tuesday night and hired a bondsman to post $75,000 bail, set by District Judge Mary Sponaugle.

West Hempfield Township police Cpl. Douglas Ober filed charges, which were approved by Assistant District Attorney Christine L. Wilson.

Regarding the late-morning crash, police allege Marsico made hand gestures at another driver before his Ford Explorer veered into the other driver’s Ford Taurus. The Taurus collided with a guardrail; the Explorer rolled several times, ejecting Marsico and his female passenger in the median, about a mile west of near Prospect Road.

Marsico and his 25-year-old passenger were hospitalized. The woman sustained head injuries and a broken arm. She has been released from a local hospital.

A witness, also driving on the highway at the time of the crash, told police the Explorer was tailgating the Taurus, before the Explorer pulled up beside the Taurus. The Explorer swerved and eventually struck the Taurus, that witness reported.

The driver of the Taurus told police he passed the Explorer a few miles prior to the collision, in which he said the Explorer “rammed” his Taurus.

The pass “must have angered” the Explorer driver, the Taurus driver told police.

The injured woman may never regain full use of his broken right arm. She had multiple bruises and cuts all over her body from being ejected through a sunroof.
