A Chester County man was charged Tuesday evening in the death of 26-year-old Anthony C. Hunter Jr. Manheim Township police filed a count of criminal homicide against 27-year-old Andre Maurice Shelton Jr., of Hurley Road, Coatesville.
Shelton was arraigned by District Judge Nancy Hamill and remanded to Lancaster County Prison without bail.
Hunter was found Saturday, Dec. 5, about 1:25 p.m., at 1708 Judie Lane, in Lancaster Green Apartment complex. He was transported to Lancaster General Hospital and pronounced dead there at 2:30 p.m.
At an autopsy Monday, Dec. 7, Dr. Wayne Ross, a forensic pathologist with the Lancaster County Coroner's office, determined Hunter died of multiple traumatic injuries and multiple brain injuries to the head and neck. Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni ruled the manner of death a homicide.
Regarding the assault, a witness told police he observed two black males fighting in a vestibule area of an apartment building at Lancaster Green. One of the males was standing over the other, repeatedly striking him with an unknown object. The male who was striking the other fled through the apartment building. The witness then saw a black pickup truck leave the parking lot out front of the building.
Police later received information from Brandywine Hospital that Shelton came to the emergency room that night about 8:30 p.m., stating he had been in a fight that day. He had injuries to his face and hands.
Police ran a check of all vehicles registered to Shelton, and found he owned a black Chevy pickup truck.
A cellphone recovered from Hunter's body showed he had been text-messaging someone and agreed to meet that person at Lancaster Green. The phone number Hunter exchanged those messages with was assigned to Shelton's cell phone account.
Manheim Township police Detective Chris Dissinger filed charges, with approval from First Assistant District Attorney Christopher P. Larsen.
Shelton is presumed innocent.
