Strasburg 275th Anniversary

The 275th Anniversary Committee normally meets at the Strasburg Borough Office, 145 Precision Ave, Strasburg, on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 P.M.  Additional volunteers to serve on the Committee are always welcome!

Sunday, December 21:  “Christmas on the Square,” sponsored by Strasburg Area Woman’s Club, a gathering of the community to celebrate Christmas, featuring carols, readings, remarks, and greetings from Santa.

Wednesday, December 31:  Finale of 275th Anniversary Celebration - New Years’ Eve on the Square.

Completed Events:  
   December 31, 2007 - New Year's Eve on the Square - Kick off the 275th Anniversary Celebration.  A GREAT time was had by all.  Featured a Chocolate Fountain (to bring the fountatin back to the Square) and a Midnight Ping Pong Avalanche.  A special THANK YOU to our Committe Members, local businesses who sponsored prizes and everyone who attended for making this event a success! 
 
   February 15, 2008 - Strasburg-Heisler Library Family Movie Night 6-10 PM at the Library, 143 Precision Ave - Two Movies "Ratatouille" (G) and "Night at the Museum" (PG), Popcorn & beverages. 
 
   March 3, 2008 - Strasburg Night at the Isaac's only on Route 741 (next to the Choo Choo barn).  From 5 to 9 pm for take-out or eat-in, 25% of the total cost of meals donated to the Committee to be used towards upcoming anniversary events.  Thanks to everyone for making this event a HUGE success! 
 
   March 28, 2008 - “March Madness” Youth Event (for youth in grades 6-12) was held at the Strasburg Area Community Youth Center, 46 West Main Street (behind Wesley United Methodist Church).  Featured live music, guest speaker, refreshments, karaoke; $5.00 admission payable at door.  This event was lots of fun and attended by over a hundred of Strasburg's Youth! 
 

   April 26, 2008 - “Old Fashioned Country Hoedown & Bakeoff,” was held at the Strasburg Area Community Youth Center building, 46 West Main Street Rear (Behind Wesley United Methodist Church) from 7 pm to 11 pm.  It featured recorded square dance and live bluegrass music, demonstrations, refreshments, and dancing fun for all.  Baked goods were judged by local “experts.”

   April 28, 2008 - 2nd Strasburg Night at the Isaac's only on Route 741 (next to the Choo Choo barn).  From 5 to 9 pm for take-out or eat-in, 25% of the total cost of meals donated to the Committee to be used towards upcoming anniversary events.  Thanks to everyone for making this event another success! 

   Entire month of May: “Visit Your Hometown,” when area merchants and attractions offered specials and reduced/free admissions to local residents and families.  The events designated with a * have been created to encourage local residents (Strasburg Borough, Strasburg Township and Paradise Township) to visit their hometown museums and attractions.  Items with a * designate the need for the residents to show their ID with proof of residence to the above in order to enjoy the special offers.  Underage children who don't have IDs will be admitted or given the promotions if accompanied by an adult with proper ID.  Participating merchants inlcluded Mrs. Penn's Shoppe, Hershey Farms Restaurant, Ghost Tour of Strasburg, Red Caboose Motel, National Toy Train Museum, Amish Village, Choo-Choo Barn, Village Greens Mini Golf, Strasburg Rail Road Company, Strasburg VFW/Sertoma Memorial Day Parade, 

 

   The June issue of the Amish Country News  is all about Strasburg and our 275th Annivesary!

 

   June 7, 2008:  Lancaster County Firemen’s Association 88th Annual Convention Parade was hosted by the Strasburg Fire Company #1.  The parade route was the Route 741 the length of the Borough.  It was a very warm day and very well attended by many departments! 

 

   June 24, 2008:  The 3rd annual "Strasburg Night" at the Barnstormers was held on Tuesday, June 24, 2008.  Special pre-game Strasburg activities included a Strasburg slide show accompanied by live music played by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band.  Local Megan Hershey sang the national anthem.  Former Borough Council President J.R. Johnson threw out the first pitch of the game as well as Candace Cosgrove, a member of the Strasburg Challenger Little League team.  Other members of the Challenger team were on the field with the Barnstormers during the singing of the National Anthem.  Even though the 'Stormers had their worst defeat ever (19-4) to the Camden Riversharks, a good time was had by all!  Proceeds from the tickets benefitted the 275th Anniversary Committee. 

   July 19, 2008: An “Old-Time Ice Cream Social,” was held at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 46 West Main Street from 10a.m.-2p.m. in conjunction with the Strasburg Area Sertoma chicken barbecue.  Homemade ice cream was made and sold as well as Strasburg Country Store & Creamery had sundaes available for purchase.  All of the homemade ice cream was sold out and everyone had a great time! 

   August 9, 2008:  “The Amazing History Race of Strasburg” was held to challenge participants to discover hidden historic treasures in and around Strasburg.  Non-motorized transportation was required and several teams competed for the cash prize money.  Congratulations to the first place team Jessica & Dominick Dinunzio and second place team Leo Petrokonis & Mark Peticca!

 

   August 16, 2008:  Strasburg Boy Scout Troop #56 held a Chicken Barbecue to raise funds to be used toward purchase of a commemorative 275th Anniversary tree to be planted in the Strasburg Community Park.

 

   August 3-September 6, 2008:  The Lancaster County Art Association at 147 Precision Avenue held a “Strasburg Art Show” in their Kauffman Gallery. 

 

   October 3, 2008:  The “Gala Dinner Dance,” sponsored by the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, was held at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania on Gap Road.  The evening featured a delicious buffet dinner at 7:30 pm catered by the Old Greenfield Inn, followed by dancing to the music of “The SilverHawks.”   The Museum was decorated beautifully and a wonderful time was had by all. 

 

   October 4, 2008:  The Strasburg Fire Company Annual Quilt Auction was held, with a great turnout as usual. 

 

   October 4, 2008:  The Anniversary Parade was held at 4 p.m. in which local clubs, civic organizations, and businesses entered floats and marching units. The parade route was Jaycee Park (218B Miller Street) and ended at East Main Street at  the east end of Strasburg Borough.  

 

   October 4, 2008:  The Gigantic Fireworks Extravaganza in memory of Murl P. and Eva Clark was one of the largest fireworks shows to take place in Lancaster County.  The funds donated by the Clark family and from the community were matched by Schaefer Pyrotechnics. 

 

   October 5, 2008:  A Gospel Hymn Sing was held at Sight & Sound Millenium Theatre and was lead by The Messiah’s Messengers.  A Community Picnic followed the hymn sing at the Jaycee Park at 218B Miller Street where neighbors ate together, Sunshine Corners had childrens games and everyone enjoyed Bingo. 

 

   October 30, 2008:  Strasburg Lions Club annual Halloween Parade was held, and was well attended and enjoyed by all. 

 

   November 15, 2008:  The Community Day of Service, a day in which organizations and individuals were urged to find ways to help their neighbors through service projects, was met with substantial rain, and organized events were cancelled.
