Wilmington-Harrisburg Freight Study

This study, which began in Summer 2001, will seek alternate freight routes from the Port of Wilmington, DE to Harrisburg, PA. Currently, much of the freight travels by trucks using PA 41, US 30, and PA 283. Trucks use this route to avoid tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, adding significant traffic to Lancaster County’s roadways. The study will identify the alternate routes and modes of transport and suggest ways to divert freight to those routes and modes.

The consultant team, led by Wilbur Smith Associates, has prepared an executive summary and three (3) technical reports which were released for public comment and review on 15 January 2003.

1) Wilmington-Harrisburg Freight Study – Executive Summary: Summarizes the findings in Reports #1, #2, and #3.

Describes the current conditions on the corridor, including both a physical description and estimates of current freight volumes.

Identifies planned enhancements along the corridor and includes forecasts of 2010 and 2025 freight traffic.

Contains a discussion of four scenarios that outline strategies for more efficient and safe movement of freight along the corridor with recommendations for specific actions and areas needing future study.
