The Conestoga Greenway Trail runs along the Conestoga River and is a

prototype for a greenway along the rest of the waterway.

The Lancaster Inter-Municipal Committee (LIMC), a group of municipalities in central Lancaster County that cooperate on selected local government activities, completed the Conestoga Greenway Plan in 1999. The purpose of the plan is to provide for active and passive recreation, education, and environmental preservation along the Conestoga.

The natural resources goal is to develop an interconnected system of natural areas through the Conestoga watershed that protects green space natural habitat, and water quality of the Conestoga River, Little Conestoga Creek, and West Branch of the Little Conestoga Creek and their surroundings.

Park and Recreation Administrator Paul D. Weiss of the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation said, “As the ninth county-owned park, we look forward to the public’s enjoyment of the Sunnyside Peninsula and use of this trail as a connection to Lancaster County Central Park.”

Directions to the three trailheads are as follows:

1) South Duke Street Trailhead - Take South Duke Street from Lancaster City past Comcast to the trail entrance on left just before crossing the bridge at the Conestoga River;

2) From South Duke and Chesapeake Streets - Turn left and continue to Broad Street - the Broad Street Trailhead appears just after Almanac Avenue on your left;

3) From South Duke and Chesapeake Streets - Turn left and continue to Broad Street past the Broad Street Trailhead - Turn right onto South Conestoga Drive to the trailhead on your right.
