Recycling Tips

It’s Summertime…and the livin’ is easy! And nothing is easier to do this summer than RECYCLE AT THE CURB! Recycling saves energy, natural resources and decreases pollution…Here are some quick tips for staying on top of recycling this summer and help Lancaster County reach - or even exceed - the 10% increase goal!

ü      Know Your Recycling Day — Recyclables are picked up every week.  If you don’t know your collection day or need to get a bin call the Lititz Borough Office at 626-2044.

ü      Don’t Trash It — At picnics and BBQ’s this summer, be sure to bring an extra bag with you to collect bottles and cans! Place the bag next to your trash can and mark it so that people know you are recycling all those cans and bottles. Throw the bag in the back of your car and empty it into your curbside recycling bin for collection.

ü      Spread the Word — Talk to your family about recycling at home. Make a fun game for kids to collect cans and bottles and to put in the bin.

ü      Keep it Clean — Rinse bottles and cans before you put them in the bin. (This helps prevent any unwanted bugs and odors during summertime heat!)

ü      Reduce Waste — Consider replacing your large kitchen trash can with two smaller ones. Use one for trash and the other for recycling.  This is a quick way to make sure you consistently recycle!

ü      When in Doubt, Leave it Out! — If you don’t know if a material can be recycled, check with the Lititz Borough Office at 626-2044 to be sure, or leave it out of the bin. Materials that can’t be recycled can actually harm the entire recycling process, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Covered Recycling

Did you know…

ü      More beverages packaged in aluminum cans and plastic bottles are consumed between now and Labor Day than any other time of year.

ü      Each ton of recycled newspaper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water.

ü      Every pound of steel recycled saves enough energy to light a 60-watt bulb for more than 26 hours.  Recycling just one can save enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for 3 ½ hours!
