VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Here are some of the available volunteer opportunities through the Lancaster County Office of Aging:

BANKING CHORE VOLUNTEER:
Assist client with balancing checkbook and writing checks to pay bills.

FRIENDLY HOME ASSISTANT:
Assist a disabled older person with laundry, cleaning, shopping, or other chores.

FRIENDLY VISITOR:
Invest a minimum of 1 hour per week to visit a lonely client at home.

HOME CHORE:
Assist an elderly person with minor repairs and other around-the-house tasks they are unable to perform themselves.

OFFICE AIDE:
Assist the office staff with clerical assignments or perform some specialized form of support task.

PHONE PAL:
Make 2 - 3 calls per week to an elderly person who would love to talk with someone.

SPECIAL EVENTS VOLUNTEER:
Assist with delivering agency Holiday food boxes to needy clients in December and/or Sertoma chicken bar-b-que dinners in May.

TELEPHONE ASSURANCE:
Provide security to someone alone by calling at an appointed time every day.

A volunteer may choose to:

* help a senior with a task on an ongoing basis through regular visits or contacts

* assist with special projects that occur only once or twice a year

* assist staff in the agency's office with a variety of tasks

* become involved with a specialized volunteer position

SPECIALIZED VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Specialized volunteers receive training that equips them for the responsibilities of each position.  Currently there are four specialized volunteer opportunities:

APPRISE Volunteer - volunteers assist older persons with health insurance and Medicare questions (volunteers must be 55 or older).

Volunteer Ombudsman - volunteers visit residents of personal care homes and nursing facilities to inform residents of their rights and to report any violations of those rights to Office of Aging Ombudsmen.
