Leaves must be in biodegradable kraft bags. The hauler will not pick up leaves in plastic bags.

 

TRASH COLLECTION/RECYCLING INFORMATION

Trash will continue to be  picked up on Friday and you are still allowed to put out THREE (3) bags of trash at a new rate of  $190.00 a year. This fee will be billed quarterly along with your water bill.

There is a dumpster for cardboard located behind the East Petersburg Fire Station on Pine Street. Please note the cardboard dumpster is for Borough Residents only. This dumpster has a slot for broken down corragated cardboard. DO NOT USE THE FIRE STATION'S DUMPSTER FOR YOUR TRASH.

Grass/Yard Waste will be picked up bi-weekly on Fridays starting the first week of April. Please keep your yard waste away from your trash.

Grass will only be picked up in the brown craft bags with a green Borough grass tag. These tags will cost $2.00 per bag.

Woody material should be bundled or if the woody material is small pieces, in brown craft bags, no heavier than 30 pounds.

 East Petersburg Borough Trash Collection/Recycling Information

Trash and recyclable will be collected weekly on Friday, in the entire Borough.  On regular collection days trash and recyclables must be on the curb by 5 am.  Trash bags /containers and your recycling bin must be placed no more than 5 feet from your curb and should be clearly visible to the collector.  Containers should be removed promptly from the curb area after collection. 

 

If a Holiday falls on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday,  pickup will be on Saturday.

When there is a holiday collection you must have your trash and recycle out Friday night since the hauler can start anytime after midnight. This is the same for leaf collection.

The following are considered Holiday's by the hauler:  NEW YEARS DAY, MEMORIAL DAY, FOURTH OF JULY, LABOR DAY, THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS

 

TRASH

The number of trash containers allowed under the basic fee each residence pays is three (3) 32 gallon trash bags or cans per week.  If you use trash bags that hold less than 32 gallons, put the small bags inside a 32-gallon trash bag or can.  Do not overstuff trash bags or cans as they may not weigh more than 30 pounds.  If you have more than your three bag limit you may purchase tags at the Borough Office @ $1.25 each.  There is no limit to the amount of bags with extra tags.

 

CHRISTMAS TREES

Each year Boy Scout Troop 33 has a Christmas Tree Chip at the East Petersburg Community Pool parking lot . The date and time will be in the winter newsletter. Donations are requested.  You can register for tree pick-up at the Borough office (you will receive a tag). 

If you decide to have the hauler remove your tree you must get a $5.00 tag at the Borough office.


OVERSIZE TRASH ITEMS

Oversized refuse items, or those items that will not fit into a trash container will be picked up each week during regular trash collection.  Examples of oversized refuse items are: push mowers (with gas and oil removed), furniture, carpet, box spring, mattress, charcoal grills, gas grills (without propane tank), and storm doors. Tires are not considered oversized items and may not be left for collection on a weekly basis.  No more than two oversized items will be picked up at any one residence each week.  All oversized refuse items must be marked with an oversize trash tag.  Tags should be attached securely and in a place clearly visible to the trash hauler.  Oversized item tags can be purchased at the Borough Office @ $5.00 each.

 

LARGE APPLIANCES AND TIRES

Large appliances - clothes washers and dryers, microwaves, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, hot water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces, dehumidifiers, etc.  Riding Mowers are NOT considered a large appliance and will not be picked up by the trash hauler.  These items will be picked up twice a year.  You will be notified of the collection days in the Town Crier.  All large appliances put out for collection must be marked with a large appliance tag; tires must be marked with a tire tag.  Tags should be attached securely and in a place clearly visible to the trash hauler.  These tags can be purchased at the Borough Office.  Large Appliance tags @$14.00 each,  Tire tags @$1.50 each.

 

 GRASS CLIPPINGS/YARD WASTE

Grass clippings and yard waste will be picked up bi-weekly during regular trash collection between April 1 and October 15.  Grass clippings must be placed in paper Kraft bags with a tag purchased at the Borough office and not mixed with other trash.  There is no limit to the number of bags put at the curb.  Grass Tags @$2.00 each.  Brush and limbs must be tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 30 pounds. Please keep your Grass Clippings/Yard Waste set back away from your trash.

 

LEAVES

The Borough will continue to provide leaf collection service, free of charge, to its residents.  Leaves must be placed in recycle bags available at the Borough office 35 cent charge and not mixed with other trash.  Bags must be placed on the curb the night before the day of your scheduled leaf collection, schedules to be in the Fall issue of the Town Crier and on your borough calendar.

 

RECYCLING

You are able to recycle #1 and #2 plastic bottles & jugs only along with your glass, cans and newspapers.  Recyclable materials will be picked up each week on the same day that trash is collected.  Put the recycling bin (with the glass, cans and plastic containers mixed together) and the newspapers out for collection whenever you put out trash for collection.  Newspapers may be placed on top of or next to the recycling bin.  Magazines may also be placed with newspapers.  NOTE:  NEWSPAPERS SHOULD BE IN BROWN PAPER BAGS (NOT IN PLASTIC BAGS). 

 

If you need a new recycle bin we have them at the Borough office. If you bring in your old bin you can have a new bin free. If you don’t have a recycle bin and would like one there is a ten ($10) dollar charge for the bin.

COMMERCIAL RECYCLING

Each Person who owns or occupies a Commercial property is encouraged to Source Separate the following Recyclable Materials:

  • Clear Glass,
  • Colored Glass,
  • Aluminum,
  • Steel Cans,
  • Plastic,
  • Yard Waste,
  • High Grade Office Paper,
  • Corrugated Cardboard,
  • Tires, and
  • White Goods.

Each Person who owns a commercial property that does not receive services under the Municipal Contract are encouraged to:

  • Provide Recycling Containers at easily accessible locations for Source Separation of Designated Recyclable Materials
  • Provide written instructions to all Persons working at commercial property to ensure that all Designated Recyclable Materials are Source Separated; and
  • Provide collection and delivery of Source Separated Designated Recyclable Materials at a frequency of not less than twice per month.
 
Lancaster City opens Recycling Drop-Off Center. Open to all City and County residents! 850 New Holland Avenue.
 
 

Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority


·         Most communities now require participation in recycling programs

·         Homeowners have learned that they should not throw household chemicals in the trash

·         Lancaster County has an integrated waste disposal system.

An integrated system means that the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority manages a system that employs multiple methods of trash disposal and processing:

·         Recycling programs—this includes a household  hazardous waste facility

·         Incineration of trash in a Resource Recovery Facility

·         Disposal of waste that can’t be incinerated in a landfill

Household Hazardous Waste Facility:

Many materials used in the home, garage and garden are considered household hazardous waste and should not be thrown into your trash. They can cause serious safety and health problems in transportation or in disposal facilities. Wastes that you shouldn’t throw in your trash include:

·         Transmission & brake fluids, antifreeze, used oil & batteries

·         Fire extinguishers

·         Household cleansers

·         Floor & furniture polish

·         Paint, stains, turpentine, thinners, rust inhibitors

·         Pesticides, herbicides, insecticides

·         Adhesives

·         Kerosene

·         Old chemistry sets

·         Photographic & pool chemicals

·         Mercury-containing devices

Some other items that should not be put in your trash but can be taken to LCSWMA:

·         Computers

·         Fluorescent Bulbs

·         Construction/Demolition Waste
